How to Get Your Skin Ready for Fall

shutterstock_153530207With the sun setting earlier and the leaves beginning to turn, it can only mean one thing…summer is officially over. As the temperature outside begins to change, it’s important to change your skin care regimen. To ensure that your skin stays smooth and vibrant throughout the fall season, here are some helpful tips to keep your skin looking its best.

Avoid Hot Water

Due to the cooler weather outside, many people shower with hotter water. In doing so, the lipid barriers on the skin break down much easier, causing a loss of moisture in the skin. To keep your skin hydrated, it is best to bathe for a shorter amount of time in lukewarm water.

Use Body Wash Instead of Soap

Body wash is more beneficial to the skin than regular soap because it provides essential hydration. Just be sure that your body wash (and shampoo) doesn’t contain sodium laurel sulfate.

Use a Humidifier

Heating systems are a must for many people during the fall season. However, the hot air they produce can dry out the skin. Placing humidifiers around the home and office can add moisture to the air and keep your skin more hydrated.

Switch to Oil-Based Scrub

In the fall, the air is much less humid than during the summer months. It only makes sense that scrubs containing more oil and fewer harmful ingredients (such as sodium palmitate) that can dry out your skin.

Opt for Cream Over Lotion

Lotion has long been the basic go-to for people when they want to moisturize their skin. However, creams are much thicker and tend to hold moisture in better due to the higher amount of oil they contain.
